  • Grandparents' Day – April 17

Grandparents’ Day will be held on Thursday, April 17. In order to have both Middle School and Lower School grandparents on campus that day, Lower School will complete their events by 11:15 am and dismiss all Lower School students at 11:30 am.  Please note this change to the calendar. • Valentine’s Day Classroom Parties - Thursday, February 13

For all of you new to Hockaday and as a gentle reminder to those who may have forgotten, we ask that Valentine’s Day cards be simple, whether purchased or made at home. We request that NO food/candy of any kind be attached.  Note: If your daughter brings valentines for her classmates, we request that she include everyone in her homeroom. Valentines may be exchanged only with girls in your daughter’s homeroom, not with those in other homerooms.
Classroom party times are listed in the Lower School Dates section.
  • Friendly Reminder

From the Lower School Handbook: No-Rescue Policy: A True Gift to Children!
    • We ask that parents NOT bring forgotten homework, swim bags, or other items to school for their daughters.
    • When they forget something and have to do without it for that day, children learn quickly to take responsibility for their day-to-day school life, whether it’s doing their homework and returning it to the appropriate place, returning library books on time, or bringing requested items such as swimsuits, caps and towels, show and tell, etc.

While your child will likely be disappointed or upset when she forgets something, you are allowing her to experience these important emotions in a low stake’s situation with lots of support. Feel free to blame it on the school and say you aren’t allowed to bring the item. Making mistakes like this is a critical part of a child’s development. To quote Jessica Lahey, author of The Gift of Failure, “The failure our children experience when we back off and allow them to make their own mistakes is not only a necessary part of learning; it’s the very experience that teaches them how to be resilient, capable, creative problem-solvers.”

Encouraging Healthy Friendships in Lower School: Parent Do’s and Don’ts
As the Lower School Counselor, I often hear questions from parents about “girl drama” and friendship challenges. While these bumps in the road are a normal part of growing up, it can be tough to watch your child struggle socially. It’s equally tricky to know when to step back and let them figure things out or when to step in and help. The good news? Parents can play a key role in teaching children how to build and maintain healthy friendships. Here are some practical do’s and don’ts to help your child navigate social dynamics.
