  • A Note from Safety and Security

At Hockaday, the safety and well-being of every student is at the heart of all that we do. Thank you for your continued partnership in helping us maintain a safe and secure campus environment for all.  Provided below is a reminder of our Connect to Host Policy.

Any individual who is not a current student, faculty, or staff member is considered a visitor. During school hours, all visitors, including parents, are asked to first check in at either the Hoak Portico or LLARC. From there, our team will help connect you with your designated host before you continue to other areas of campus.

This process allows our Safety and Security Team to keep track of who is on campus while also ensuring that each guest is greeted, assisted, and guided with care.

Why Mental Health Is the Greatest Gift We Can Give Our Daughters
As parents, we dream of our daughters growing up accomplished, confident, and successful. We imagine report cards filled with A’s, awards on display, and opportunities that open every door. I also often hear parents say, “I just want my child to be happy.” (I think I’ve probably said that too.) But happiness is a feeling that comes and goes. No child, or adult, feels happy all the time. Mental health is something deeper and more lasting than happiness, accomplishments, or success.

The Hidden Gift of Boredom: Why Unstructured Time Matters for Adolescents and Teens
When your daughter says, “I’m bored,” it may be tempting to fix it right away. Many adults quickly offer an activity, suggest a screen, or make a plan. But boredom is not always a bad thing. In small doses, it can help adolescents grow in healthy ways. As psychologist Lisa Damour reminds parents, “The job of teenagers is to become independent.” Unstructured time gives them opportunities to practice that independence in everyday ways.
Middle school students live busy lives filled with school, activities, friendships, and technology. While those things are important, students also need quiet, unplanned time. These slower moments give them space to think, create, and learn how to manage their own time.

  • 2026-2027 Math Placement

All incoming fifth graders are placed in the same level math class; however, based on teacher recommendation, we offer enriched sections of math in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades and a modified approach section in eighth grade.
    • Enriched Math: Students follow the same curriculum as the other students in their grade; however, the pace is quicker, and the scope and depth of concepts is broader. Movement into the enriched sections is reviewed at the end of each school year.
    • Eighth-Grade Modified Approach: This section follows the same curriculum as the other students at an adjusted pace utilizing a more comprehensive, detailed approach when introducing new concepts.
When making math placement recommendations, we analyze a wide variety of criteria: the end-of-year math inventory, report card grades and feedback, ERB scores, the ability to comprehend new and more abstract concepts, enrichment/bonus (higher level) problems, and comfort with risk-taking. Most students are placed in our already advanced regular sections of math. Math teachers will reach out to families if your daughter is recommended for a sixth, seventh, or eighth grade enriched or modified section in eighth grade.
