  • Note from the HPA President

    Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!

Parents choose Hockaday because of the experience created by our incredible faculty and staff. Your leadership, guidance, and genuine care for our girls does not go unnoticed— it is talked about on carpool drives, around dinner tables, by alumnae reflecting on their time at Hockaday, and by prospective families who hope their daughters get to be part of the Hockaday community.

The impact you make extends far beyond the classroom to help shape the girls' confidence, character, and future.

We are deeply grateful for the time, energy, and heart you pour into our girls and the greater Hockaday community. The HPA thanks you all for the meaningful difference you make each and every day.

  • Daisy News Spotlight

Thank you to our amazing Pre-K Circus Chairs, Abby Hancock and Kelly Sajnani, for creating such a special event for our littlest Daisies. We are also grateful to Becca Fernandes and Sofi Sugasti for orchestrating a wonderful May Day Tea.

Over the past four-plus years, we have been fortunate to have exceptional leadership from Laura and Aaron Navarro in Uniform Resale. They transformed it from an afterthought tucked in a back closet into a beautiful space in Upper Trent. We are deeply appreciative of their years of service and leadership as we transition to a fantastic new team of volunteers—Jean Larson, Emily Polito, and Sarah Reidy '98.

Our school community simply would not be the same without your dedication and volunteer spirit.

    Understanding Why Children Misbehave
Children don’t just misbehave randomly; most behaviors have a reason/purpose. This is true for almost all the common childhood behavioral issues: lying, stealing, arguing/talking back, refusing/noncompliance, whining, interrupting, aggression, bullying/teasing (and yes, these are all within the range of “normal childhood behavioral problems”).

  • 2026-2027 Math Placement

All incoming fifth graders are placed in the same level math class; however, based on teacher recommendation, we offer enriched sections of math in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades and a modified approach section in eighth grade.
    • Enriched Math: Students follow the same curriculum as the other students in their grade; however, the pace is quicker, and the scope and depth of concepts is broader. Movement into the enriched sections is reviewed at the end of each school year.
    • Eighth-Grade Modified Approach: This section follows the same curriculum as the other students at an adjusted pace utilizing a more comprehensive, detailed approach when introducing new concepts.
When making math placement recommendations, we analyze a wide variety of criteria: the end-of-year math inventory, report card grades and feedback, ERB scores, the ability to comprehend new and more abstract concepts, enrichment/bonus (higher level) problems, and comfort with risk-taking. Most students are placed in our already advanced regular sections of math. Math teachers will reach out to families if your daughter is recommended for a sixth, seventh, or eighth grade enriched or modified section in eighth grade.
