Student Named Regneron Science Talent Search Scholar

Congratulations to Aimee Guo (Class of 2025) who was named a Regeneron Science Talent Search scholar, one of only 300 in the nation!
Scholars were chosen based on their outstanding research, leadership skills, community involvement, commitment to academics, creativity in asking scientific questions and exceptional promise as STEM leaders demonstrated through the submission of their original, independent research projects, essays and recommendations.

Aimee’s research paper, "Marker Track: Accurate Fiducial Marker Tracking for Evaluation of Residual Motions During Breath-Hold Radiotherapy,” is focused on improving the accuracy of radiation therapy for cancer patients. She researched under the guidance of Dr. Weihua Mao at Johns Hopkins University.

“Through my research, I've realized the importance of precision in radiotherapy, as doctors have to deliver an adequate radiation dose to the target cancer region while sparing surrounding healthy tissues,” she said. “I’ve observed how many medical professionals utilize fiducial markers to aid in the assessment of motion caused by respiration during radiotherapy; however, current marker tracking algorithms cannot track in CBCT images with inconsistent movements.”

To solve this, she created an algorithm with two stages: first, she reconstructed 3D marker positions to pinpoint the static locations of the markers; then, she used Meta AI's Segment Anything Model 2 (SAM 2) to continuously track the markers throughout the scan, even accounting for small movements that may occur. “Marker Track ensures accurate and efficient treatment, aiming to increase life expectancies and decrease patient treatment costs,” she said.
