Hockaday Welcomes Music Instructor Sarah Carmichael

Please welcome Sarah Carmichael to the Hockaday faculty as Private Violin and Viola Instructor and Instructor for the Second Grade Strings Program. Sarah got her start in teaching music nearly twenty years ago through the University of Texas String Project teacher training program, and has participated in extensive teacher training in the Suzuki Method and the Galamian method of teaching since that time.  An Atlanta, Georgia native, Sarah started her violin studies at the age of 4 in a Suzuki program, so the transition from student to teacher was a natural one during her time at UT Austin, where she completed both her undergraduate and master’s degrees in Violin Performance.  After completing her studies in Austin, she moved to the Dallas area, where she currently maintains a private violin studio at her home. In addition to her teaching, Sarah performs regularly with the Dallas Opera. She has been a member of the East Texas Symphony in Tyler, the Memphis Symphony, and has performed extensively with the Fort Worth and Austin Symphonies. Sarah has played electric violin nearly every Sunday since 2007 with some of Dallas' top jazz musicians for the King of Glory Lutheran Church Jazz Service in Dallas, which she greatly enjoys. Her recording work can be heard on Ricki Derek's 2012 Sinatra-style album Here's to Christmas, on the 2016 movie soundtrack for Tumbledown, as well as the soundtrack for Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams, released in 2002.  During the summer months, Sarah is quite involved with the Mimir Chamber Music Festival at TCU in Fort Worth, helping to run all aspects of the program.

Sarah has been on the periphery of Hockaday’s music program for many years, having performed chamber music with the other string teachers, teaching Hockaday students in private lessons, and participating in the annual Strings Festival in February.  She is very excited about joining this outstanding community of teachers, students, and administration, and is looking forward to working with the Hockaday girls in the school year ahead!

If your daughter is interested in private viola or violin lessons, please contact Melissa Curtis, Director of Auxiliary Programs.
