Lower School Garden

Fourth Grade students planted marigolds in the Lower School Garden in preparation for Dia de los Muertos.
The girls will harvest the flowers in November to use on traditional altars as they learn about the holiday.

The Lower School Garden is used by many teachers. Besides planting and harvesting, students keep gardening journals to record observations in Science class. The girls also learn how to read a thermometer and record the temperature. Language classes head to the Garden to learn plant and flower names.

“You can tie [the garden] into every single subject. You tell me a direction you want to go and I guarantee you we can tie the garden to it,” said Lara Guerra, Lower School science teacher.

When the harvest is plentiful, Guerra holds cooking classes in which the girls practice math, social studies, music and language in the making of foods like salsa or vegetable soup.
