Welcome to Summer at Hockaday 2024!

Lower School in-person camps and classes will take place in weekly, half-day sessions with a few full-day options, as noted in the schedule. Registrations will close at 11:59 p.m. every Thursday for the upcoming week to allow us to make preparations for new groups of participants.

The following Enrollment Contract and will require an electronic signature within the registration process. Please read prior to registering.

Kaleidoscope Day Camp

A BEST SELLER!
 
Summer at Hockaday's longstanding day camp, Kalediscope Day Camp, occurs in two-week sessions with a variety of activities to include imaginative play, critical thinking, creative expression, outdoor exploring, cooking, science, splash days, and much more. Each session will center around fun and engaging themes. Each two-week session will differ from previous sessions, so join us for multiple sessions! 

Lunch is included in the tuition for Kaleidoscope Day Camp.
Please do not send lunch with your camper.

Camp Invention - ILLUMINATE

A SUMMER AT HOCKADAY FAVORITE!
 
Camp Invention is where BIG ideas become the next BIG thing! Join us this summer for our brand-new curriculum - ILLUMINATE! Local educators lead the week of hands-on activities as boys and girls spend time exploring brand-new themes: Be an Innovative All-Star with In the Game, Shine Bright with Let's Glow, Explore the Earth and Water with Operation: Hydro Drop, and Build Big Ideas with Prototyping Studio. Lessons explore connections between science, technology, engineering, and innovation. Don’t miss out on brand new challenges.
 
Camp Invention is a creation of the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Explorations Camps & Classes for Grades 1 and 2

Lower School Explorations offers weekly in-person camps for children entering kindergarten through fourth grade. Programs offer a variety of activities and enrichment that span a wide range of interests. Classes are offered as half-day options with the opportunity to create a full-day of programming by selecting a morning and an afternoon program. Participants who attend a combination of a morning and afternoon offering within the same week should add lunch to their camp schedule for an additional fee.

Lunch is served to all campers who participate in a full-day schedule of programs, which includes a morning and afternoon program within the same week or a full-day program. Lunch includes hot and cold options, fresh fruit and vegetables, yogurt, a fresh salad bar, and dessert on Fridays.
 
Register for multiple weeks to create a summer experience of creative learning and enrichment! 

Explorations takes place in person June 3 through July 19 with morning sessions occuring 9:00 a.m. to noon and afternoon sessions occurring 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Lunch takes place from noon to 12:30 p.m. Before and After Care is available for an additional fee.

  • 3D Innovation & Design with Minecraft by Lavner Education

    3D Minecraft Camp is for beginner, intermediate, and advanced campers with separate activities for all three levels. Campers will utilize their creativity, learn and improve skills, and work individually or collaboratively in a unique virtual world on Lavner's exclusive private servers. In addition to designing and building, campers will learn: (1) installing and using mods, (2) using WorldEdit, (3) survival & scratch crafting recipes, (4) using Redstone & electrical circuits, (5) game design and mini-games, (6) working with multiplayer servers, and  (7) competition skills in weekly Minecraft tournaments. On Fridays, everyone participates in weekly tournaments, and the excitement is off the charts!
     
    Campers may attend one week or multiple weeks, and move up in curricula each week!

  • 3D Printing for Minecraft and Roblox by Lavner Education

    Take your Minecraft and Roblox creations to the next level (and dimension), and receive 3D prints of your builds! Your printed items will truly be one-of-a-kind when you design them inside the Minecraft and Roblox platforms and print them out at camp. Using Minecraft to create your own epic worlds and Roblox to create and customize characters, campers will create designs such as foods, vehicles, tools, and more.
     
    3D Printing for Minecraft and Roblox is offered in partnership with Lavner Education.

  • 3D Printing with 3D Modeling by Lavner Education

    In 3D Printing Camp, 3D model and print items that show your true passion!  Themes will include: doll accessories, Pokémon characters, spy gadgets, desk pets, and dinosaurs. Lessons will focus on scalability and how designs can be easily uploaded and printed for mass consumption. Discover what it's like to operate, clean, and care for a 3D printer. Using cutting-edge 3D printers, campers will model prototypes, mod existing designs, and print them in 3D! 
     
    3D Printing with 3D Modeling is offered in partnership with Lavner Education.

  • Adventures in STEM with LEGO® Materials

    Let your imagination run wild with tens of thousands of Lego® parts! Build engineer-designed projects and use special pieces to create your own unique designs! Projects are rotated seasonally to ensure that both new and returning campers can explore the endless creative possibilities of the Lego® building system. 
     
    Adventures in STEM with Lego® Materials is offered in partnership with Play-well TEKnologies.

  • Adventure on Bikes

    A bike camp for your young cyclist who wants to get out and ride with friends for an adventure-filled morning on our beautiful on-campus trail. We will work on mastering essential bike riding skills and participate in fun bike competitions to challenge ourselves! Interspersed with our riding will be breaks to cool off and play indoor games. Campers will need a bicycle and helmet, which can be stored on campus during the camp week.
     
    Please note: Campers must be able to ride a bicycle. If your child is still learning, please register for First Bike Ride.

  • Afternoon Bookworms

    This reading class will read selections from the Hockaday Summer Reading List and incorporate a variety of games and activities to enhance the understanding of the text. If you love reading, come join us as we read together, dig for meaning, examine character development, and engage new vocabulary! All are welcome to join us for this enriching reading experience.

  • All-Girls STEAM – Innovators by Lavner Education

    Experience the power of STEAM in an all-girls setting. Each day, we will dive deeply into an aspect of STEAM and at least one famous woman in STEAM! Explore the power of polymers and linked chains of atoms. Learn about the science of Stephanie Kwolek, the inventor of Kevlar and a polymer scientist! See the science come alive by making your own bouncy ball. Follow Grace Hooper's story, the inventor of the COBOL computer language! Dive into the basics of binary and learn basic coding using Scratch. Before you leave, listen to Reshma Saujani, founder of Girls who Code, a passionate advocate for girls in technology. Have you ever driven across the Brooklyn Bridge? You've seen the work of engineer Emily Roebling! Join us in a day of engineering as we get hands-on with a set of bridge design challenges sure to get you thinking! Every time you have used an Apple product, you've seen the work of Susan Kare, a famous graphic designer! Learn about icon design, pixel-based art, and graphic design basics. Next, learn about Cheiko Asakawa, who helped pioneer text-to-speech and other accessibility technology for multimedia. End the day with a bang by 3D printing your icon design on a keychain! By breaking the Enigma code, mathematicians helped decipher German signals during World Word II. Learn about the only woman on the project, Joan Clark. Then, use your new cipher skills to break out from our digital escape room before it's too late!

  • All the STEM by Drone Together

    This STEM introduction class has it all: building, creating, designing, engineering, coding concepts, basic robotics, and an introduction to drones. This is a very hands-on and active camp. We aim to make a child's first experience with STEM both fun and engaging, so we create a space for the kids to work collaboratively to bring their ideas to life. Our belief is, the more fun they have in this learning environment, the more likely they are to continue pursuing STEM opportunities in the future. Opportunities will abound in this space in the future, and no STEM company brings more excitement - so come join us in living our  motto: "Bringing the Future to People...Today."

What patterns of kindness can we find in the American Girl characters? We will work as a camp to create and complete a service project to spread kindness to others in our community.   • Animal Encounters (Field Trip Camp)

    Animal lovers unite! This week is all about animals - learning about them and seeing them in person. Hockaday's transportation department will take us on fun and educational field trips in the DFW area to locations where we can view and interact with animals. Please make sure you bring a brown bag lunch as we will picnic together each day! A water bottle and sunscreen are also a must!

  • Bash 'em Bots using LEGO® Materials

    Design your custom LEGO® bot to take on any challenge. Mix and match chassis designs using wheels, treads, or walking legs. Combine these with tools like drills, hammers, and battering rams as you refine your masterpiece by sparring with friends and overcoming obstacles. Apply real-world engineering and physics concepts to help you bash and crash your way to victory.

  • Bike Mania

    Five full days of bike challenges and fun will include daily bike adventures. We will begin with mastering essential bike skills and proceed to a new bike adventure each day. Camp will include a trip to the new Creekside Bike Skills Park with transportation provided by Summer at Hockaday! We will have relays, games on bikes, and our super-fun Tour de Meadow bike race. Interspersed with our riding will be breaks to cool off and play lawn games. Campers will need a bicycle and helmet, which can be stored on campus during the camp week.

  • Brain Games & Puzzles

    Learn about one of the largest and most complex organs of our body – the brain. We will learn the anatomy of the brain, how it functions and also understand how the brain can be manipulated using brain-teasing magic puzzles. We will challenge our brains with problem-solving activities and brain teasers. Come join us and sharpen your minds!

  • Brilliant Strengths

    This camp is for students who have a diagnosis of dyslexia. Led by a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT), this strengths-based camp is based on Nicki Winter's program, Brilliant Strengths. It is designed to increase self-esteem and lower anxiety in students with dyslexia by incorporating children's literature, emphasizing strengths, and focusing on inspirational people with dyslexia.

    Please note: Camp occurs in two-week sessions.

    Chess Summer Camps are the perfect way to introduce the game of chess to those new to the game and to deepen chess understanding for established players. Grandmaster instructors will provide daily lessons, puzzles, and play to help guide you through each session. Grandmasters will share their chess vision on (1) Tactics, (2) Strategy, (3) Middlegame Planning, and (4) Endgame Technique. Each camp provides opportunities to practice these skills with classmates in a variety of activities and workshops.

  • Coding 101 with Scratch by Lavner Education

    Join Coding Camp 101 to gain lots of hands-on experience with computer science, game design, and animation! Scratch is a program designed to gain plenty of skills in coding, design, and more! Learn how to create story lines, use cool design features, and create interactive games with your newly acquired skills at camp. After creating your first animation, you'll work on a wide variety of interactive projects such as a maze game, a basketball game, a whack-a-mole game, a fruit droppers game, a Tron game, a table tennis game, a pinball game, or an asteroids arcade game, complete with levels and scoring! Each camper will finish the camp week with at least two projects.

    Set in the format of a writing workshop, campers are given an entire week to focus on cultivating their inner creativity through the development of themed short stories. We will have lots of story prompts for you to work with, which can serve to inspire you to create your own ideas. We will also read short stories and excerpts from famous authors like H. G.   • Digital Art with Framed Art Included - Young Artists by Lavner Education

    Join us to learn how create beautiful pieces of art using a digital platform. Sketch, draw, point, shadow, style, and much more! At camp, you can use your trackpad, mouse, or stylus (optional) to draw a self-portrait, paint a still life, create anime figures, draw a favorite doll, create a new Pokémon character, create a cartoon script with text, paint landscapes, and much more. Learn the art of creating shadowing, creating textures, creating 2D/3D objects, utilizing spacing, utilizing color, and much more! Campers will produce a digital art show to share with all campers at the end of each camp week. Additionally, campers will pick their favorite piece from the week to be printed, framed, and mailed to the camper's home.   • Digital Fashion Design by Lavner Education

    In this fun and creative camp, participants will create a custom tote bag and a digital design portfolio! Campers will be exposed to West Coast Vibes, including a relaxed vibe that boasts a casual and effortless look full of fringes, tassels, and bold colors. We'll move to East Coast Vibes, which boasts a level of refinement and bold looks wile not seemingly overstated. Campers will then plan out and design their own projects, creating clothing patterns online that can be printed and used. Using graphic design software, campers will design fabric patterns, a fashion logo to be custom printed on a tote bag, and develop a mood board and designs for a fashion line. (Please allow 4-6 weeks to receive your tote bag in the mail.)

  • Epic Day Camp: Bikes, Hoops, Skateboards, Scooters, & Forts

    This is a camp for energetic kids who love a variety of activity and play! We will ride our bikes on the campus trails, shoot hoops on the basketball court, ride scooters and skateboards, and build modular structure forts. Each day will bring a new adventure and more fun - an EPIC DAY!
     
    Campers will need a bicycle and helmet and a scooter and/or skateboard and pads, which can be stored on campus during the camp week.

    Is your child ready for 1st grade? This camp is a fun yet purposeful camp offered for children that will be entering 1st Grade in the fall. Students will prepare for the next grade by sharpening their phonological awareness, phonics, writing, basic math skills, and social skills. Participation in multiple sessions is encouraged. This camp is created and taught by a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT).

    This is the ultimate robotics and coding experience!     Immerse yourself in the world of spy technology with brand-new, action-packed missions for 2024! Take your technology skills to the next level by participating in exciting spy missions throughout the week. Agents will need to fly virtual drones, create surveillance systems, encrypt messages, and much more! Using forensic science, spy skills, robotics systems, Roblox spy games, and encryption via ciphers, campers will learn about running an investigation using forensic science to complete exciting missions.

Gain spectacular hands-on experience with building, designing, and creating as you navigate your way through superhero missions and create your very own superhero identity!     This Suzuki violin intensive taught by Hockaday’s Dr. Christine Rewolinski will focus on the fundamental elements of gross and fine motor skills and aural training consistent with the pedagogical skills and outcomes of both sensory-motor stage learning and violin performance. Independent movement, aural reasoning, visual-spatial reasoning, social interaction, sensory-motor acuity, and developed confidence in both solo and ensemble performance are the benefits of this world-renowned program.

    Kidokinetics USA Archery Fundamentals program is designed for elementary children looking to learn the basics of this fantastic Olympic sport! Archery will give your child the opportunity to develop important skills such as focus, concentration, coordination, balance, strength, stability, and accuracy.     At Video Production for YouTube®  Camp, learn the exciting process of creating a successful vlog/video for YouTube! Identify an audience, create a brand, brainstorm a creative format, produce engaging content, and create at least one YouTube-style video. Sample topics may include Minecraft tutorials, video game walkthroughs, technology unboxing, product reviews, how-to videos, fashion videos, travel vlogs, lifestyle tips, and so much more! By the end of each camp week, campers will have created at least one video, written a description for a YouTube channel, and discovered strategic ways to make YouTube channels a success.

  • Soccer Skills Camp

    Get ready for an exciting soccer experience this summer at The Hockaday School's Soccer Camp! Our camp is designed to provide players of all skill levels with a dynamic and engaging environment to develop their soccer abilities while having a blast on the field. Camp highlights will include daily focus on specific aspects of the game, scrimmages that are active and friendly, positive reinforcement from Hockaday’s excellent coaching staff, and age-appropriate learning for beginner and experienced players.

    Coached by Hockaday’s own Johanna Sanchez, Coach Joh has been coaching youth soccer since 2007 and has dedicated her career to nurturing young athletes and instilling a passion for the beautiful game. Starting in 2007 with the Houston Dynamo youth and later transitioning to the FC Dallas youth in 2011, she has had the privilege of working with players of all ages, ranging from 2 to 18 years old.
