    Bio

Lisa Culbertson ’96 was named Hockaday’s new Head of Upper School following an international search. Most recently, Lisa currently served as the Head of Upper School at Phoenix Country Day School in Arizona. At Phoenix Country Day, Lisa was a transparent and engaged leader, working with faculty to improve grading and assessment processes, ensure course alignment with the strategic mission of the school, and conduct a comprehensive faculty research study focused on the student experience. Mindful of the demands on high school students today, Lisa created a Student Wellness Action Team designed to support student health and well-being.

Prior to joining Phoenix Country Day, Lisa was the Upper School Dean of Students at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Austin, where she created and implemented several programs to enhance the student experience. At St. Andrew’s, she updated retreat programming; launched a student Leadership Lab to serve both the school and the community; created grade-level dean positions for emerging leaders; refined school policies and standards; and engaged parents on real-time issues facing students through the Parent Education Program. Additionally, Lisa cherished her leadership of the Junior Experience Program, a required cultural immersion experience designed to intentionally place students in dramatically different environments for an extended period of time. This was an extraordinary program, and she led memorable immersions to Spain and founded a new experience to Nepal.

Lisa has also enjoyed being in the classroom and teaching courses across disciplines. At Phoenix Country Day, she taught Social Entrepreneurship, a course that allows students to design real-world solutions for local and global issues. Additionally, she has taught 21st Century Ethics, Advanced Placement Statistics, Geometry, and Mathematics. Outside of the classroom, Lisa has remained committed to athletics and has passed on her love for Crew by mentoring athletes and serving as the Varsity Head Coach for Tempe Junior Rowing.

After graduating from Hockaday, Lisa earned a Bachelor of Arts in Government from Cornell University and a Master of Education from Columbia University, Klingenstein Center at Teachers College. She continues to be active with the Cornell Alumni Admissions Ambassador Network, the Cornell Rowing Alumni Mentor Program, and remains involved in Hockaday’s Alumnae Association by serving on the Board of Visitors.
