    Bio

A concert pianist, teacher, and adjudicator, Dr. Grace Long received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Point Loma Nazarene University, and Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance degrees from the University of North Texas.

Born in Shanghai, China, Dr. Long started her piano study at a very young age. She performed and broadcasted many concerts when she was a pianist in a Song and Dance company in Nanchang, Jiangxi province. Her life story was published in the book titled “What Music Means to Me” by Richard Rejino.

Dr. Long’s teaching career started when she was in Jiangxi Normal University in China. After the completion of her Doctoral degree in 1991, she devoted herself to private teaching in her home studio. In the fall of 2000, she joined the piano faculty at the Hockaday School. In her teaching, Dr. Long focuses on developing a strong technical foundation in her students. She emphasizes the importance of listening and creating the most desirable tone quality. She teaches a wide-range of classical repertoire to all-ages, helping students understand the different styles and genre of music. She stresses that success comes from discipline and diligence. She promotes and provides a variety of learning and performing opportunities for her students. As a result, her students are frequent winners in many local, regional, state, national, and international competitions. Among them were 1st place winners in the events such as the RMTA Jazz Competition, the Dallas Piano Solo Competition, the Dallas Symphonic Festival, the McKinney Young Artist Competition, the Youth Duo-Piano Competition in Fort Worth, the TMTA State Level Solo Performance Contest Senior Concerto Competition, the MTNA Solo Performance Texas State Competition, and the MTNA Solo Performance South Central Regional Competition. Most recently, her student won a 2nd place at the International American Protege Piano Competition, and was invited to perform at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York July, 2016.

Dr. Long also teaches the curriculum of the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program. Her students participate in the annual RCM examinations.
Dr. Long is a member of “Who’s Who of American Woman”, and “Who’s Who Among Asian Americans”. She is a juror member of the Piano Guild Audition and is frequently in demand for adjudication of piano events. Dr. Long was awarded “MTNA Teacher of National Finalist” in 2013. She was the competition chairman of the DMTA Dallas Symphonic Festival in 2007-2008, 2008-2009, and 2014-2015. She continues her professional development through many prestigious festivals, seminars, and master classes such as the International Piano Academy in Freiburg, Germany,  and the annual “Piano Texas” in Forth Worth, to name a few.

Dr. Long and her husband, Gordon, reside in Plano, Texas. They are the parents of two Marksmen, Nathaniel and Daniel.
