Electives
As I mentioned, electives began today for our Middle School students. Most are held during our Flex Period on Days 1 and 5 from 11:10-11:40 am.

Parents’ Night
The teachers and I look forward to visiting with you all tonight at Parents' Night. We'll begin the meeting with light refreshments in the foyer of the Nasher-Haemisegger Theater at 5:45 pm. You will have the opportunity to meet your child’s teachers and advisor and hear about our academic program; it’s one of our favorite special events! For those of you who are unable to attend, please check our website for the grade level packets or contact your daughter’s advisor for a hard copy.

Fall Conferences
The Middle School online sign up procedure for fall conferences opened on September 3.  Thank you again for your patience as our providers solved a tech problem the week before when the sign-up was supposed to be open. You received an email from me that fully explained how to engage in the process. Conferences are a great opportunity to engage in conversations regarding your daughter’s day-to-day life at Hockaday and for the goal-setting that will guide her endeavors this year. Conference Day for 5th grade will take place throughout the day on Tuesday, September 24, and 6th-8th conferences will be throughout the day on Friday, October 4. Please be sure to mark your calendars accordingly.

Reminder About After School Care
All fifth and sixth graders remaining on campus after 3:30 pm go to Daisy Den, which meets in the 5/6 Commons each day from 3:15 - 6:00 pm. Daisy Den is complimentary until 4:00 pm. For girls who are not registered for Daisy Den and are remaining after 4:00 pm, there is a drop-in fee of $30.  From 3:15 - 4:00 pm the girls are free to chat, play games, do homework, or play in the courtyard. There is a quiet study hour from 4:00 - 5:00 pm. After 5:00 pm the girls may again choose how to use their time. To pick-up from Daisy Den call 214-360-6420 as you arrive on campus, and we will send your daughter out to meet you at the Middle School door. As an alternative, you may text your daughter when you arrive on campus. After we read the text, she will be dismissed to the Middle School door. Some seventh and eighth grade students continue to study in the LLARC library at the end of the school day from dismissal until 6:00 pm on Monday through Thursday and until 4:30 pm on Fridays. Participating students must report to the US Library by 3:30 pm. After 4:30 pm on Fridays, any seventh and eighth graders not yet picked up must report to Daisy Den.

Cornerstones Studies
We will begin our Cornerstones Studies program in advisories on Monday, September 9. Our program is skills-based, building on specific social/emotional skills each year of Middle School. It promotes communication, conflict resolution, leadership, and emotional intelligence. Further, each student and faculty member will have a Cornerstones journal for the year. These may be used in advisory, Cornerstones lessons, etc. The journal is meant to give each student a place to internalize Cornerstone topics, formulate thoughts, or just have a moment to reflect. These journals will be passed along each year (even to Upper School) so that each child can review her previous thoughts and opinions. In order for the girls to feel free to express their opinions, thoughts, or feelings during Cornerstone Studies, advisory, or even in their journals, we will also include guidelines on respect for privacy and differing opinions in our first discussions. I encourage you to further broaden this important work at home by discussing these topics with your daughters, and we will keep you updated on the lessons we present in upcoming Daisy News communications. In addition, Rachel Innerarity, our Middle School counselor, will continue integrating Mindfulness techniques into the advisory and Cornerstones Studies programs this year so that our students are better able to deal with stress and become more resilient, thoughtful, and self-aware.

Safety Exercises
The School also soon begins this year’s cycle of safety exercises; we will practice a Fire Drill next week.  We also regularly participate in Lock Down and inclement weather drills. Teachers discuss the safety protocol for each type of exercise before the drill.

Carpool
I have just a few reminders about carpool that will continue to ensure student safety and efficiency. Please do not talk or text on a cell phone while moving through the carpool line; this is a school-wide policy. In the afternoons, you can help to ensure the safety of our students by not parking on the crossing lines, not stopping in the middle lane and maintaining a safe speed. Please also remember to pull all the way up to the end of the sidewalk in the mornings. This allows more students to exit cars simultaneously and shortens the time you spend in the carpool line. Most importantly, please do not drop off or pick up your child on Welch Road either in the mornings or afternoons. The dangers are far too great.
