A Message from Randal Rhodus

Dear Lower School Parents,

It is hard to believe that there are fewer than five weeks of school left. Where has the time gone? Read more

On Monday at our gathering, all Lower School students observed our final Kids on the Block program for the school year. Your daughters were entertained by the puppets Melody (performed by Amy Banks) and Jennifer (performed by Chris Brandt). During the performance, Melody learned more about Jennifer’s learning differences as she read over and corrected a letter Jennifer had written to her pen pal. Jennifer became frustrated with her errors and feared that her pen pal would not want a friend with learning differences. Melody explained to Jennifer that friends accept people as they are. Melody also learned that many talented people in history also had learning differences. Jennifer shared that she and Thomas Edison had something in common; they both had trouble learning to read and write.

Through this performance, we hope our students gained a better understanding of learning differences and how we support students with learning differences at Hockaday. During the next two weeks, Mrs. Hawthorne will follow up with additional activities and discussions on this topic during her class meetings.

This year, we are hopeful that the weather will not keep us from hosting our end-of-year Family Farewell Picnic. Please mark your calendars for this event: Tuesday, May 24 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Additional information about this event will be included in next week’s DaisyNews.

Sincerely,

Randal Rhodus
Head of Lower School
