A Message from Linda Kramer

Dear Middle School Parents,

We’ve had another extremely busy week in Middle School! In addition to their normal class schedules, all Middle Students have taken our annual ERB testing yesterday and today. Our Latin students enjoyed their annual Roman Banquet on Tuesday evening, our mathletes returned from state competition last weekend, and athletes completed the spring sports season. Read more

Thanks to Shane Bourek, Terry Bourek, and Patti Black for traveling with our math students to San Antonio and to our wonderful softball, track, tennis, and lacrosse coaches for another wonderful season!

IMPACT TESTING FOR SIXTH GRADE: Sixth grade parents, IMPACT testing (baseline concussion measurement) will begin for your daughters during study hall periods on May 5,9,11, and 13. All rising seventh graders go through this testing so that we have a baseline profile for all students, and you may view the School’s concussion protocol at this link.

C.A.R.E. CALENDAR HONORS: Over the last few weeks our fifth graders busily worked on designs for the annual C.A.R.E. calendar competition. This organization helps to educate children about the dangers of substance abuse. The following fifth graders will have their entries reproduced in the online C.A.R.E. Calendar and displayed at NorthPark Mall from April 18-27: Sam Courtwright (cover); Lauren Roach (September); and Caroline Zimmer (October). Additionally, Jayna Dave, Sydney Hoyl, Audrey Schwartz, and Alexandra Weinmeister won honorable mention awards and will have work on display at NorthPark also. Finally, the following girls will also have work on display at NorthPark from April 18 until April 27: Kennedy Eagleton, Ela Guo, Jordan Hanna, Zoya Haq, Lola Isom, Riley London, Sherry Long, Millie Montsinger, Maddie Muller, and Ella Weathersby.

STUDENT COUNCIL ELECTIONS: Fifth through seventh graders have filed for 2016-17 Student Council offices. We try to provide a “real” election experience in that the girls file for office, engage in a primary process, obtain a nomination, and then run for office. Each candidate who is nominated is informed about guidelines and presents a campaign speech for peers in grades five through seven. Eighth graders do not vote as they will be in Upper School next year. The process ends with our Student Council Installation on May 6. Current fifth graders run for Treasurer; current sixth graders seek out the offices of Speaker of the House or Secretary; current seventh graders run for the office of President with the runner up moving into the office of Vice President.

SEVENTH GRADERS OFF TO NEW MEXICO: Seventh graders are off on Sunday, April 24 for their annual trip to New Mexico. Girls need to meet advisors at check-in at 9:45 a.m. We’ll be based at Ft. Burgwin (SMU Taos), visiting museums in Santa Fe, exploring almost every site of interest in Taos, and traveling to Bandelier National Monument and the Bradbury Science Museum at Los Alamos. We are also privileged to presentations by several professors at SMU Taos on archaeology and the botany of the area. Mix in fabulous food and fun with friends and the week becomes yet another treasured memory of Middle School! Seventh graders will return to Dallas on Thursday evening but will not attend school on Friday. Seventh grade parents, please be sure you have turned in all forms and checked over the packing list carefully. Contact your daughter’s advisor if you have any last-minute questions and please arrive at Love Field on time on both Sunday morning and Thursday evening.

FIFTH GRADE WORLD’S FAIR: Our fifth grade parents have received an invitation to the World's Fair presentations on Friday, April 29 between 11:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m. in Hicks Meeting Room, Wang Commons, and the LS/MS Library. Students will come to school in their country costume that morning and may keep it on throughout the day if they choose. Our fifth graders will inform us all with presentations on countries and cultures around the world!

END-OF-YEAR SPECIAL EVENTS: Click here to see a schedule for the last week of school. Please note that all Middle Students attend Eighth Grade Graduation this year on Friday, May 27 in Penson Athletic Center. If your fifth, sixth, or seventh grader cannot attend that day, please notify me in advance so that we can adjust our seating arrangements.

Please remember that there is no school tomorrow in any division due to teacher in-service, and we’ll see all seventh graders at Love Field on Sunday morning at 9:45 a.m.!

My best,

Linda Kramer
