The Hockaday Experience
Institute for Social Impact

Young Authors

Mimi D. (Class of 2026) created her Social Impact club, Young Authors, after working as a Writing Center intern.
“I would go to Foster Elementary and help with writing skills, and realized that the kids loved when they were able to tell stories,” she said. As an extension of the internship, she created an after-school program to help students create their own books.

Currently, she and the other Hockaday volunteers head to Foster once a week and work with 20 kids in grades 3-5 on improving writing skills, using synonyms, varying sentence structure, punctuation, and grammar. So far, they have published more than 10 books, which are printed and can go in the school library. “The kids love it,” said Mimi. “Writing can be really rigid for kids, this not only gave them the way to improve their skills but they could find joy by writing something they wanted to write about.”
